About

I originally set up this blog to keep a record of my climbing (both ice and rock) adventures out here in Japan.

In winter climbing mode

The first winter season out here, 2011-12, was pretty amazing. The ice isn't that close to Kyoto but I managed to get a few solid trips in to some stunning places. Alas, when the winter season finishes there isn't much to do here - I'm not really one for gym climbing (and the gyms here are extortionate!) and what rock there is is either a long way away or pretty poor quality. Winter 2012-13 was a complete no-go for climbing, due to logistical difficulties and an unfortunate incident (my climbing partner broke his wrist early on in the season).

However, where there is a lack of climbing, Kyoto more than makes up for it with a wealth of awesome cycling. In particular, road cycling. It's far too good not to take advantage of... so here we are.

In summer cycling mode

From its origins as a purely rock/ice climbing blog, I now keep track of all kinds of climbing here - on foot, on rock, on ice and on the bike. Think of it more as a catalogue of 'general adventuring in Japan'. I hope you will enjoy with me the mountains of Japan - however I choose to get up there!
